the north bay -- the location hit the hardest so far. more on those stories ahead. but first --- i'm pam moore, here in the kron4 weather center with jaqueline this first day of winter. >> jacqueline: we are still seeing rainfall in the bay area at this hour. as we take a look of the stormtracker 4 radar this is just what we expected in richmond, and all, this wat moderate weather cell. and also over the oakland area, light rain over dublin, pleasanton and heavier rainfall pressing towards 680. consistently, light showers and down the peninsula with light rain over the water. light rain and pressing towards palo alto. we will continue with this rainfall for this

evening. showers. this is a first part of a system that impacted us with moisture moving slow to the south. we have a another system just on the heels of this one. to the north, it is bracing towards your weekend. and we are already dealing with delays at visibility with j. r. stone. and also the weekend rainfall. details, coming up. >> pam: and our team starts tonight with kron 4's j-r stone. where the bad weather is hitting. during one of the busiest travel days of the year. j-r, we hear it's a big mess for southwest fliers in particular. >>reporter: you have got that correct there are delays all across the board. however, when it comes to south west it is a complete mess. this is video from the

last one hour. you see how long the line is just to get to the ticket counter. many of these people are waiting just to check their bags! i talked to people that with between three and four in a half hours just to check their bags. with a flight delays, and 90 flights have been cancelled all day. at one point, the are riding the ladies were 3.5 hours. the average delay time is 60 minutes-90 minutes. passengers-. >> i waited for poured five hours and background just to check-42 bags. i waited $4.50. in the southwest lines i waited four and half hours--just to check to backs.

heaviest near the golden gate bridge. moving pretty decent and for a closer look let us check out with closer charles clifford, for #80. for a closer look now -- let's head out to kron4's charles clifford. he's live along highway 80. charles, what are road conditions looking like? >> the visibility is not that great this is interstate 80. this is westbound towards the bay bridge. the caltran is saying that this will take 30 minutes to go towards san francisco and one hour to get to the airport. it is pretty slow moving let us show you some video, earlier the rainfall and it got nicer. a time lapse video from the oakland hills. that storm sweeping and also a very slick day. i drove along interstate 24 with the recent accident to the west of the caldecott tunnel. backed up traffic

>> the national mourning the newtown elementary school tragedy -- with a moment of silence. it was one week ago today -- a gunman opened fire at a connecticut school. murdering 26 people -- including 20 children -- before taking his own life. much more on they day of mourning ahead tonight. but first. we turn to the renewed debate over gun conrtol in america. today for the first we are hearing from the nation's most powerful gun lobbying group -- the n-r-a. grant lodes is standing by with the story. the n-r-a >> this was big. they offered his condolences and waited a week to speak out. and today it doubled- down.undeterred by protestors or anything else. not giving an inch on gun control the n-r-a's solution - a new team that will work to put armed officers in every school in the country.because it says the next school killer is "waiting in the wings"

>> i call on congress today to act immediately to appropriate what ever is necessary to put a armed police officers in every single school in this nation to read the only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun. why is the idea of a gun could wind it is used to protect the president of our country? or, our police, but to bat when it is used to protect our children in our schools. >> as soon as the nra finished its comments - gun control advocates spoke out against the idea that more guns equals safer schools. >> (feinstein) the n-r-a's ceo blaming mass shootings on the media , it is a delay

justine waldman made dozens of calls today to find out. she is here now with the answers. >>reporter: the n-r-a wants the armed officers in schools when children return to school in january. i spoke with several school districts today. to see if this is even possible. and some already have armed police in the hallways. we will start in oakland. where the spokesperson told me. the district has armed police officers now on certain campuses that are considered high risk. but that more guns in schools is not the solution. in oakland, they are more worried about a stray bullet from an outside shooting, than an attack inside the school. also adding, congress needs to evaluate the matter and start a discussion before making any decisions. from the san francisco unified school district. didn't answer yes or no to the question but said. >> "we continuously work with the san francisco police department and the department of emergency management to prevent and prepare for emergencies. we

all agree that children should never be victims of gun violence whether at school or in the community, yet children ages 5 to 14 in >> we take this as a loss by losing support for music, the arts and opportunity for children to get intervention for reading those resources are taken away because they have to go to what is provided for " school resource officers " to. >> also, the school unified school district say that the prevention efforts such as school counselors, and intervention programs would be a far wiser investment of public funds. san jose did not want to comment. and also i did not get a full return of my e-mails or my phone calls

triggered a lockdown -- ahead.and at 5-30.if you think the winter storm just wait until you see what's hiiting the midwest. but first tonight -- efforts to stop american from going off the fiscal cliff in dissarray. as lawmakers flee the break that's next. just before departing for his annual holiday vacation in hawaii, president obama leaders to take action on crisis. karin caifa reports from washington, where members of congress have also left town. >> good afternoon, everybody. >>reporter: after speaking with party leaders friday afternoon, president obama called on congress to quickly come up with a solution to avert some end- of-year tax hikes associated with the fiscal cliff. >> in the next few days i've asked leaders of congress to work towards a package that prevents a tax hike on middle class americans, protects unemployment insurance for 2 million americans and lays the groundwork for further work on both and deficit reduction. >>reporter: the remarks came after house speaker john boehner failed to muster enough of his party's support to bring his "plan b" to the floor. his proposal would have effectively raised taxes only on those americans making more than one million dollars a year. >> we had a number of our members who just really

didn't want to be perceived as having raised taxes. >>reporter: the two sides each left the capitol for the christmas holidays, blaming the other for inaction. democrats said thursday's failure in the house pointed to a need for more compromise by the g-o- p. >> house republicans have gotten the message loud and clear that a comprehensive solution to the looming fiscal cliff will need to be a bipartisan solution. >>reporter: senate republican leader mitch mcconnell said the next move needs to come from the president. >> he is the only one that can do it. this isn't john boehner's problem to solve. >>reporter: without a deal, steep tax hikes and massive government spending cuts are set to trigger after january first. in washington, i'm karin caifa. kron4 news for a more >> indepth look into the into the challenges, the president and congress face -- as the fiscal cliff deadline ticks forward. kron4's political analyst will join us tonight, at 5:30. >> pam: police now say the

deadly home invasion -- that rocked a wealthy silicon valley suburb -- was *not random. raven dixon was arraigned in a santa clara court today on charges of being an accessory to the murder of raveesh kumar kumra durung a home invasion-- back on november 30th. dixon was led out of the san jose courtroom in chains after the judge put her bail at one million. a pre-trial hearing is set for the middle of january. >> in san jose, police ordered a school locked down after a pair of robbery suspects retrieved a gun from the backyard of a nearby home. as kron four's rob fladeboe reports now, the suspects were then trailed by police to another nearby residence where a brief standoff >> one of at least two armed robbery suspects could be seen being taken into custody by police early friday near the intersection of mt. pleasant and clayton roads in east san jose. they are thought to be the same men who were

spotted earlier by a resident of nearby monrovia avenue. for about two hours, robert saunders elementary school here on rocky mountain way was locked down as precaution. a few blocks away, in what police call a 'surround and call-out' operation' at least 21 officers and a couple canine units surrounded a home on clayton road where the suspects and several other people were thought to be holed up inside and quite possibly armed with a gun thought to have been used in a robbery on thursday. >> it may have been a fire arm that was from yesterday's event. but they went to the backyard to retrieve it. it did not belong to a residence but this is speculation. they are probably going to go back to pick up the firearm which they did. it was seen in their possession. they took off in the vehicle and

it was traced here. >>reporter: after a brief standoff, the suspects surrendered. several other people evacuated from the home waited on the sidewalk as police searched the home, sounding the all-clear here and at the elementary school by about 10:30. police acknowledged the commitment of so many officers seriously taxed the department's depleted resources for a time but had no choice with a school so close by. in san jose rob flade boe kron 4 news. a man who died >> jacqueline: this rain through the bay bridge toll plaza still seeing some wet pavement and showers are run portions of the bay. the north bay is really bear the brunt of the secured over the richmond/rafael bridge. some lighter showers in hayward as well as union city with dublin and

pleasanton. towards the peninsula, also light rainfall over th n the la hour or so with the satellite & radar still summons to know at lake tahoe. however, it is been a bit more showery it is moving so slow to the south your we continue to see these showers streaming in the bay area. as we look slightly to the north the next system the tail end of this is pressing rainfall towards a regatta it will continue in slowly move towards the south overnight. light of lingering showers along the coast. by 3:00 p.m., still widespread with moderate rainfall through the north bay. also moderate through san francisco. 5:00 p.m., still impacting oakland, concord, hayward.

and over the south bay and for the inland valleys it both continued to go towards the south. and although rain will be south of the golden gate. as we take a look at 11:00 p.m. we will continue to see shower activity. 11:00 a.m.-in the afternoon but early evening but this is the second of three to everett systems. today saturday will be the next one and a sunday, rainfall at 10:00 a.m. by 4:00 p.m. but the christmas eve and christmas holiday look fairly dry. rainfall could be pushing in the night of christmasrelated. >> pam: the 49ers will have a change to clinch their division with a win this sunday against the rival seattle seahawks. but -- it might not be easy --- kron4 sports' jason appelbaum will be here to break it down -- at 5-30.

>> jacqueline: yesterday, we were dealing with a very clear defined warm and cold sections. we can see the rainfall has diminished from yesterday. mainly snowfall as we can see through pennsylvania, new york, and through ohio. a number of winter weather advisories. with snowfall rates that could bring 1 ft. in portions of this region. as we take a look of the watches and the warning's there is a winter weather the advisory could produce two-5 in.. however, the pink and the red could produce more snowfall. and in this location near pittsburgh we are going to c 1.5 ft. and gusting. this is going to produce to the east but it

will possibly dissipate within 24 hours. >> this high winds and record snowfalls have turned holiday travel into a nightmare before christmas. this satellite photo shows the size of the winter storm now moving into new england. down on earth, the picture is not so pretty. in the upper midwest it is more than a foot deep. >> heavy, wet snow driving hazardous. >> we just dumped in the ditch >> flying unpredictable. >> i'm prayin' >> i'm afraid i wont make it >> hundreds of flights delayed a multi=vehicle pileup in iowa. another one in michigan, some deliveries delayed. but not the mail. wisconsin post office workers promising to come through for christmas. >> rain sleet and snow. really important to get the

a new poll shows 57-percent of respondents believe kerry as top diplomat would be good for the country-- while 32-percent say it would be bad. >> one week after the shootings at sandy hook elementary school, there were tributes, prayers, and calls to action. the nation's most prominent gun rights group also spoke out for the first time. karin caifa reports from washington. >>reporter: from new york stock exchange, to south florida, to the nation's capital -- >> we gather as religious leaders both to commemorate the one week marker of the tragic shootings in newtown, connecticut. >>reporter: to the community at the center of the tragedy. memorials at 9-30 a-m eastern, marking one week since the shooting at sandy hook elementary school that killed 20 children and six adults. as investigators continue to hunt for a motive as to why 20-year-old adam lanza killed his mother and later opened fire at sandy hook, the nation's most prominent gun rights lobbying group broke their silence.

the national rifle association argued in a statement that the nation's schools should have armed protection. >> the only way to stop a monster from killing our kids is to be personally involved and invested in a plan of absolute protection. the only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun. >>reporter: education secretary arne duncan, in his first public remarks since the shooting, said the nation's overall gun policy needs change. >> one disturbed young man was mad at the world. and i can't help but wonder what he might had done, how this might have been different if he didn't have access to those guns. >>reporter: president obama observed his own moment of silence at the white house -- days after his call for a cross-agency panel to address gun policy -- hoping no community has to endure newtown's heartbreak, again. in washington, i'm karin caifa kron4 news.

>> tonight. now for today's market update. as anticipated. stocks took a nose dive after house republicans called off a vote on raising taxes on the wealthy last night.on wall street. the dow closed the day down 120 points. it had lost as much as 189 at one point. the nasdaq dropped 29- points. and the s-and-p 500 fell 13.

>> pam: better economic news for california today -- unemployment has dropped below the ten percent. in a new jobs report -- the november the rate was nine- point-eight percent. down slightly from october. the improvement comes something as a surprise to many. since leading economists had predicted our state's unemployment to remain in the doublen digits through next year. >> jacqueline: rainfall totals is for the brunt of this system. santa rosa and nearly 1 in. in petaluma. pretty much everywhere else, the rainfall totals have been under two tenths of 1 in. of rain fall just shower in drizzly. as we take a look outside the stormtracker 4 radar fence and showers around the bay. and also to the livermore valley to and through the peninsula of a more rainfall is is in store for tomorrow.

the satellite and radar showing snowfall we are still seeing some showers conditions through the bay area. if the rainfall will return off in the north bay and moderate rainfall expected until 1:00 p.m. with shower conditions likely. sunday, another round of wet weather by late morning. gusting some lingering showers on futurecast but keeping our eye to the north. midnight, you will see that it is widespread. also towards san francisco. the moderate will become more expensive concord, oakland, hayward. and the south bay, more-- expansive. there rainfall shifting towards the golden

officer pete mann, from the truckee chp office. right now -- we're looking at video from i-80 at donner summit -- roads very snowy. >> caller: yes, we have had one heck of a storm of but it has been nice. with 6 in. reported in the office and much more on tap. the roads are going to be slow >> pam: is caltran having difficulty keeping up with the snowfall? >> i think that caltran is doing a great job. they have their full staff and a seasonal workers with extra patrols to help mitigate traffic. >> pam: it is unlikely a snowy weekend if you recall the couple were traveling in the sierras and got st uck.l what is your advice
